The season of classic head and leaf lettuce is now coming to an end. Also, rucola is currently increasingly coming in from southern European sources. During these months, the Berlin-based wholesaler Gemex GmbH, based in the local wholesale market, is increasingly focusing on the classic lettuce varieties from Italian sources. However, even during the domestic season, the GmbH will offer its customers Italian goods.
Almost all year round, Italian lettuces will arrive twice a week in the warehouse of the Berlin-based company. ''Rucola traditionally has its peak season around March, and then sales are always soaring. Until December, these lettuces are sourced directly from the main production area of Verona. Then things go on with goods from Sicily, among other places,'' explains a spokesman for the company.
Current situation
At the moment, demand and product availability are well-balanced, according to the sales manager. Bottlenecks are usually only occurring in the summer: "However, despite the high temperatures, we had enough goods of satisfactory quality this year."
In addition to rucola, other varieties from Italian soil are selling very well on the Berlin wholesale market. "We market other colorful lettuces, like the Lolo Rosso and Bionda almost year-round.''
Classic wholesale
The Gemex company was founded in 1993 and is located on the grounds of the Berlin Fruchthof in the Beuselstraße. The operating area there has grown steadily over the years, to more than 1000 m² at this very moment. For 10 years, the wholesale business has increasingly relied on products from southern Italy and various Balkan countries, and these products are marketed among others to restaurateurs and specialist shops.
