Spain: Greater broccoli production expected thanks to rainfall

Non-profit organization +Brócoli expects the broccoli production in the season that is now starting to be better than that of the one that came to a close last summer. This is due to the abundant rainfall this year, which means that there will be no periods of drought in the producing regions for practically the entire 2018/2019 campaign. In the months of November and December, the harvest is expected to be between 10 and 30% greater than in the same months of 2017.

If the weather remains favorable, as has been the case recently, the prospects for the broccoli season are good. This is the opinion of Javier Bernabéu, secretary of +Brócoli. He predicts an abundance of broccoli and optimum prices for growers and consumers in the first months.

Despite this, Bernabéu says that there may be a shortage of broccoli in the following winter and spring months. In those months, there will probably be a reduction in the acreage, because the price of the vegetable last year was bad during this period.

Moreover, the rainfall recorded in recent months has ensured that there is sufficient water for the entire season and that there will certainly be no periods of drought until at least the summer of 2019. Also, the vegetable's consumption reaches good levels. According to the secretary of +Brócoli, this has "been constantly growing in recent years."

+Brócoli partners meet at Fruit Attraction
+Brócoli is again participating in Fruit Attraction, the leading international trade fair for fruit and vegetables, held in IFEMA (Madrid) from 23 to 25 October. The goal is to promote broccoli under the slogan #Meunoalverde ("I'm with the green"). Broccoli consumption is already becoming trendy in Spain, mostly because of the vegetable's health benefits and versatility.

Many of the organization's more than 60 partners (growers, marketers, packers) will be present at this important event. The goal is to promote the inclusion of this vegetable in the diet of consumers and to encourage the arrival of new partners to help strengthen +Brócoli and help it spread its message, says Bernabéu.

According to Bernabéu, broccoli is a flagship crop for Spain. The country is one of the largest producers of this vegetable in the world. More than 90% of the Spanish production is intended for export, particularly to Germany, the United Kingdom, France, the Netherlands and Italy. Outside Europe, exports are also going to new markets, like Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.
