Spain: Huelva's berry sector needs an airport

The manager of Freshuelva, Rafael Dominguez, said they needed an airport to ship out berries so that they arrive faster to distant countries.

Domínguez said that Huelva's agricultural sector stood out because of its drive to innovative, constant search for new markets and new products to maintain the province's agricultural sector's profitability level. This innovative character, he said, "unfortunately, and not infrequently, clashes with the province's infrastructure's limitation and deficit."

According to Dominguez, it is useless to open trade routes with China, India, Canada, or the Arab Emirates if the sector does not have the infrastructure needed to export the fruit to its destinations in a manner that allows it to arrive there in the best conditions. An airport is indispensable because it is the fastest means of transport that shortens distances, he said.

Dominguez made this demand because the airports near the province of Huelva do not meet the necessary standards so that the berries transported through them arrive in the best conditions to their destination; hence the need to have this type of infrastructure in Huelva.

The manager of Freshuelva said that land transportation continued to be the main way to ship berries, and highlighted the commitment made by Puerto de Huelva, which has made an important investment in the South Pier in recent years, to increase the activity of container traffic. This will offer Huelva's producers a new opportunity to export their fruits.

"Fortunately, we have a port that is starting to pay attention to the agricultural sector. However, we believe it is necessary to complete this seaway with an airfield that allows our products to arrive in better conditions to farther destinations," Dominguez added.
