71 million plants in the current campaign

Spain: Fresón de Palos has almost completed the planting season

Fresón de Palos' planting season will only last for a maximum of two more weeks. According to Alfredo Arcos, technical director of the company, everything is going as expected so far, with the exception of the high temperatures recorded up until a few days ago.

The quality of the strawberry plants, which the company grows in nurseries in the provinces of Ávila and Segovia, is high. It is estimated that 71 million of them have already being grubbed out, cleaned and transported to Palos de la Frontera for their planting in Huelva. The cooperative employs over a thousand people for this task. In the 2018-2019 strawberry season, more than six thousand people will be employed for all tasks, and the total production harvested is expected to exceed 71 million kilos. The fruit will then be sold in Spain, Europe and Asia.

Fresón de Palos was the first cooperative to set up its own nursery in order to have a supply of strawberry plants. These initially need regular exposure to low temperatures, so that they can later yield a good production in the more than 1200 hectares of farms in the south. These are certified strawberry plants of the highest possible quality; a solid base for the next steps in the production chain.

The company currently owns more than 100 hectares for the growth of plants in the provinces of Ávila and Segovia, with capacity for 71 million strawberry plants. The company also has trial fields that are permanently managed by a professional technical team. With all this, the company has a competitive advantage in terms of technology, quality and costs.
