Spain: Eight Andalusian horticultural firms seek opportunities in Hungary and Romania

Between 1 and 5 October, a total of eight Andalusian horticultural companies took part in a direct trade mission to Romania and Hungary. The action has been organized by the Council of Knowledge, Research and Universities, through Extenda, the Andalusian Agency for Foreign Promotion.

The goal of this mission is to promote the presence of Andalusian products in these markets, as well as to establish contacts of interest with importers and distributors in the fruit and vegetable sector working with these destinations. The idea is to promote the diversification of the fruit and vegetable sector, in which Andalusia is a leader in terms of exports, with 40% of all national sales between January and July 2018.

Andalusian presence
The Andalusian delegation consists of six companies from Almeria (Ecoinver Export, Frutas Hortisol, Gruventa, Hermanos Daza Palmero, Hortibalanegra and Zoi Agrícola) and two from Seville (Inter Terra S.A.T., Naranfruit).

The organization of this action by Extenda will be co-financed with funds from the European Union.

Fruit and vegetable exports
According to data from Extenda, Andalusia has been the leading Spanish exporter of fruit and vegetables in the first seven months of 2018, with 40% of all sales and 3,701 million Euro in revenue. Almeria (with 1,729 million), Huelva (with 1,030 million) and Seville (with 267 million) are the provinces with the largest exports.

Andalusia exports mainly strawberries, with shipments worth 456 million Euro from January to July 2018 (12.3% of the total). Next in the ranking are tomatoes, with 440 million (11.9%); peppers, with 433 million (11.7%); raspberries, blackberries and raspberries, with 290 million (7.8%); and blueberries, bilberries and fruits of the genus Vaccinium, with 266 million (7.2%).

Europe is the main destination for Andalusia's fruits and vegetables. Germany tops the ranking, with 1,059 million (28.6%), and is followed by France, with 608 million (16.4%) and the United Kingdom, with 550 million (14.9%).

Hungary and Romania are markets with plenty of potential for Andalusian companies, hence the suitability of a mission like this, as it will allow them to establish contacts of interest with Hungarian and Romanian importers and distributors.

Fruit and vegetable exports to Hungary totaled 15.1 million Euro in the first seven months of 2018; up 2.4% compared to the same period of the previous year. Meanwhile, exports to Romania also totaled 15.1 million; 8.8% more than in January-July of the previous year.
