Spain: More foreign than Canary bananas shipped to Spain in July

In July, the volume of foreign bananas shipped to the Spanish market exceeded that of Canary bananas. The volume of Canary bananas in July had not been as low since 2013. The total available supply reached 43,017 tons; the highest for that month in the last decade. In July, the market share of foreign bananas oscillated between 56% and 73% of the available supply in the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands.

In July 2018, 18,983 tons were shipped from the Canary Islands, while imports, mainly from Africa and Latin America, amounted to 31,590 tons. Since re-exports stood at 7,556 tons, Spanish consumers had access to 43,017 tons of bananas. With these figures, the market share of imported bananas in July has ranged from a minimum of 56% to a maximum of 73% of the supply available in Spain.

The main suppliers of imported bananas in July were Costa Rica, with 10,275 tons, Ivory Coast, with 4,633 tons, Colombia, with 3,725 tons, France with 3,686 tons and Cameroon, with 3,567 tons. Together, these countries accounted for 82% of the total volume.

So far in 2018, shipments from the Canary Islands have reached almost 219,124 tons, while imported bananas stand at 207,163 tons and re-exports at 63,561 tons, so the available supply has amounted to 362,727 tons, 18,922 more than in the same period of 2017. The accumulated market share of imported bananas in Spain has ranged from a minimum of 40% to a maximum of 57%.

The main suppliers of imported bananas so far this year have been Costa Rica, with 71,674 tons, Ivory Coast, with 37,210, Colombia, with 26,119 and France, with 23,854. These four countries account for 77% of the total volume.
