China: premium apples forecast beat economic downswing

China is one of the world's main apple growing countries with a production of 55% of global the total. In the 2015 season (between July 2015 and 2016) China produced 43 million tons of apples, and an increase of 5% compared to the year before. Apple production has been steadily growing in the last ten years.

Due to an economic downturn, prices of fruit are currently lower than in the previous season. On the other hand, e-commerce is taking off in the prosperous cities at the East coast and high-income and young consumers are willing to spend more on premium fruits. It is expected that the import volume of apples will reach 100,000 tons by July 2016. Biggest exporters are Chile and the United States.
