Mexico: Garlic production in Zacatecas increased

According to September's harvest progress report of the Agricultural and Fisheries Information Service (SIAP), garlic production in the state of Zacatecas increased by 116 percent when compared to 2014. 

In 2014 the state had 2,048 hectares devoted to garlic, which were harvested in September, while in 2015, the state had 2,296 hectares, 4 of which were lost, so the total harvest amounted to 2,292 hectares.

According to the data, in 2014 the production amounted to 27,160 tons with an average yield of 13,261 tons per hectare being obtained; while in 2015 the production amounted to 21,724 tons and with an average yield of 13,838 tons per hectare.

Thus, Zacatecas ranks first in the national production of garlic.

The main producers in the state are the municipalities of Calera, with nearly 5,720 tons per year; Guadalupe with 4,671; Fresnillo, with 4,613; Villa de Cos, with 4,589, and Panuco with 2,156 tons.
