Production of brussels sprouts is winding down in California, and with Mexican supplies still ramping up, prices for the commodity have been strong this month.“Prices for brussels sprouts are very good at the moment,” noted Bob Montgomery, sales manager for Beachside Produce. “It's always a decent market this time of year, with the Christmas demand, but I would say that prices are a little elevated for this time of year.” He added that supplies have been light this season, with the state's water shortage playing a part in lower volumes this year. Production should last through the month, but the transition into supplies from Mexico will keep prices robust.
As of December 18, the price for a 25-pound carton of brussels sprouts out of the Central District in California was between $24.00 and $30.95. At the Mexico crossings through Southern California and San Luis, Arizona, the price for a carton of brussels sprouts from Mexico was between $28.00 and $33.61.
Good demand has also contributed to the strong market. Favorable coverage of the product and a growing awareness among consumers about the health benefits of the commodity have kept it in good demand.
“The positive press that brussels sprouts have received has made them into a mainstream commodity,” said Montgomery. “More people are using them in meals, so that has increased demand.”
