In the African country of Rwanda, work is being undertaken in planting various avocado plantations and a joint packaging station. The initiative for this was taken by a group of Rwandans and Americans with a passion for fruit and knowledge of production, combined with the Rwanda Development Board and the ministry of Agriculture, reports Total Produce B.V. in its newsletter.
The climate in Rwanda is very suitable for the production of avocados. With an average and reasonably constant temperature of 22 degrees Celsius and average rainfall throughout the year, a hectare would produce around 20 tonnes of this increasingly popular fruit. This is more or less double compared to neighbouring countries such as Tanzania. The focus for sales will be on the European market to start with. With an annual growth in consumption of 10%, Europe is - after the United States - the largest market for avocados.Education and training for local producers
Over the next few years an area of 100 hectares will be planted in Rwanda, which is central in the horn of Africa. A packaging station will also be realised here. Local producers have the possibility to sign up and will receive education and training concerning modern agricultural techniques. The initiative takers hope to harvest for the first time in 2017. The volume will increase annually to the target volume of around 4 million kilos per year.
