Peru: The demand for passion fruit increases
Passion fruit is probably regarded in other countries as the children's favourite fruit because of its sweet taste. The taste for this fruit, however, transcends ages and both the young and the old are currently enjoying it. Thus, according to the National Institute of Agrarian Innovation, there has been a 30% increase in crops of passion fruit and pomegranate over the last year.
The main producing region is still Pasco, mainly Oxapampa, which has approximately 2,000 hectares of this crop; followed by Cajamarca, Huanuco and La Libertad.
Exports had a turning point in 2012, the year in which the value of exports doubled and amounted to $75,000 dollars. In 2013 exports increased and amounted to $77,500 dollars. Exports this year, up to August, have been higher than in all 2013 and have amounted to $84.600 dollars. The growing demand for passion fruit comes mainly from Italy and the Netherlands, interested in natural passion fruit.
While the value of exports has been growing steadily, the truth is that there is still much to be done to promote and position the fruit abroad. The growth in exports is mainly due to exports of unprocessed passion fruit. The juice and beverage market in countries like the United States and Canada is constantly growing and developing passion fruit based drinks could be a great opportunity for any bold entrepreneur, especially for a fruit that does not have a fresh export quality.
