Italy: Seed coriander increasingly popular

The coriander harvesting campaign ended in August and, according to Assosementi data, seed coriander boomed - crops went from covering 700 hectares in 2004 to over 10,000 ha during the latest campaign.

"Seed coriander is mainly cultivated in
Marche, Apulia, Emilia-Romagna e Umbria. Thanks to the significant investments made in processing and logistics, the Italian produce has become a leader on the global market. From an agricultural point of view, the crop is pretty easy to grow. In addition, with the new diversification obligations introduced by the CAP, interest towards coriander might grow further."

Though coriander is not so popular in Italian kitchen yet. Despite being part of the same family as carrots, celery and parsley, 90% of it is exported to Asia. Exported volumes could increase further, especially towards Latin America, bureaucracy permitting.
