Movement of pears out of the Pacific Northwest continues to be brisk as the pear season progresses.“Mid-way through our season of availability, we have about half of our crop available,” said Cristie Mather, director of communications for the Pear Bureau Northwest. She noted that last last year at this time, 60 percent of the crop was still available, so movement has been faster this year.
Demand has also been good, she added, with adequate volumes of fruit from the Washington and Oregon region filling the demand left by other regions with short crops. That's certainly been a factor this year as movement zips along.
“I think promotions have been very strong early in the season,” she said. “We've provided good support to retailers to ensure that fruit is sold, and it's been a good season, so we're happy about it.”
