“We have looked at the numbers and anticipate a 10% reduction. The projected 185,000-ton harvest will have to be adjusted to 165,000.” Ochagavía also stated that Chile, Argentina and the EU are still the country’s main export markets, but that the 100,000-ton estimate has to be reduced to 80,000 tons of anticipated export. Export numbers to the US are also lower than expected, but this is due to Mexico’s discount prices.
The chairman stressed the importance of flexibility in the avocado industry. The market, he says, is busy opening new export destinations, in full collaboration with the government. Desired targets include China, Brazil and South Africa. “We have opened talks with these destinations and are certain that we will soon be able to add these to our network of global business partners.”
