All Fruit and Vegetable Producer Organisations (FVPO) from Almeria have eventually refused to join the first great European FVPO, called Freshcoop (Fresh Cooperation of POs), which integrates traders from several countries. The idea began to take shape three years ago and the project was presented in several stages to Almeria's agricultural producers, who refused to take part in the initiative.
In the province of Almeria, one of the most recurrent debates in recent years focuses on the concentration of supply. Recently, from within the sector, as well as the region's Council of Agriculture, Fisheries and Environment, it has been insisted that one of the great opportunities offered is the integration of producers into large FVPOs, both to improve product sales as well as to better manage aid funds from the European Union. Ultimately, Freshcoop improves coordination between European producers with the use of the Common Agricultural Policy's "favourite" tool.
