Besides flavour and colour, another factor has an impact on Hass avocado consumption. "The price for the Hass is higher, and due to the recession in Europe, many opt for the Bacon, which despite having a less intense taste, is much more affordable for consumers. The Hass variety is twice as expensive as the Bacon."
Spanish avocados compete head to head with Israel, both with the smooth skin and Hass varieties. Israeli avocado production is approximately 80% smooth skin and 20% Hass, and according to Crabé, the Hass variety is slowly taking over.
"Israel is also realising that the Hass variety is more profitable and they are transforming plantations of other varieties, such as the Ettinger, into Hass. They arrive around the same date, with a similar quality to Spanish avocados," he explains. "However, Spanish Hass avocado is well recognised for its quality and is one of the best avocados in Europe."
