Spain: Avocado market increasingly more focused on Hass variety

"At the moment we are working with the Bacon and Fuerte varieties, and this week we started with the Hass, although we have waited a little to achieve the optimal oil level in the fruit," explains Bruno Crabé, of Frutas Manzano S.L. The particularity of Hass avocados is that their colour changes with the maturing process, going from green to brown or black. "For this reason, the variety is rejected in some countries, although they change their mind as soon as they taste them, as they are tastier than other varieties."

There are countries where Hass avocados are not traditionally consumed and never have been, so it is hard to introduce them in the market. In countries like Germany, the Greenskin variety still prevails, because despite becoming softer with the maturing process, the skin remains green, just like the Bacon and Fuerte varieties; however, in the UK, Hass avocados are becoming increasingly popular in supermarkets.

Besides flavour and colour, another factor has an impact on Hass avocado consumption. "The price for the Hass is higher, and due to the recession in Europe, many opt for the Bacon, which despite having a less intense taste, is much more affordable for consumers. The Hass variety is twice as expensive as the Bacon."

Spanish avocados compete head to head with Israel, both with the smooth skin and Hass varieties. Israeli avocado production is approximately 80% smooth skin and 20% Hass, and according to Crabé, the Hass variety is slowly taking over.

"Israel is also realising that the Hass variety is more profitable and they are transforming plantations of other varieties, such as the Ettinger, into Hass. They arrive around the same date, with a similar quality to Spanish avocados," he explains. "However, Spanish Hass avocado is well recognised for its quality and is one of the best avocados in Europe."

Frutas Manzano S.L. packs its avocados in nets of 1 kg and 1/2 kg, in cardboard 40x30 and 60x40, Euro Pool and Ifco boxes, although adapting to customers' needs. The avocados are exported to the European market under the Manzano brand and the Manzano Exclusive premium brand.
