Spain: Leading the citrus market is in diversification of Clemenules

In order for Castellón citrus growers to dominate the market, new varieties must be bred to diversify the king of all tangerines, the Clemenules. Florentino Juste, the general director of Instituto Valenciano de Investigaciones Agrarias (IVIA), the Valencia Institute for Agricultural Investments, says Castellan market has all the potential to be market leader in clementines.

Juste confirms that Spain supplies 80 to 90% of all the world’s tangerines. The chairman of the Generalitat Alberto Fabra added that the Castellón region is involved in 18% of citrus export. In order to continue this privileged position, Just states the industry should diversify: “We shouldn’t just plant Clemenules, but introduce new kinds of exciting varieties.”
