AU: Great Southern expects increased cherry harvest

Great Southern orchards are at various stages of their seasonal development now, some of the early sites in the Narromine district have small developing cherry fruitlets.

This early season fruit will be ready to harvest by the end of October. Other cherries are just now coming into blossom and these later and cooler production orchards will extend production through until mid January.

Great Southern’s cherry production will increase significantly this year on the back of extensive young cherry plantings undertaken in 2005 – 2007. This coupled with the long term weather forecast that reads ‘dry and getting dryer’ will hopefully ensure a record production season – a far cry from the past two wet and difficult cherry seasons.
