Less potatoes grown and harvested in Germany
In Germany figures were published by the 'Bund-Länder-Sachverständigenausschuss' regarding the German potato cultivation in 2012. According to these data about 10.6 million tons of potatoes were harvested in Germany. With this the harvest this year is 10.6 percent less than last year and the quantity is 4.8% less than the average of a number of years.
Also the area decreased further compared to previous years. In 2012 potatoes were grown on about 238,100 hectare. With this the area is about 8% smaller since 2011. About 41 percent of the quantity were consumption potatoes (grown on about
97,200 hectare.)
In all federal states with the exception of Schleswig-Holstein the potato area decreased. The largest decrease was in Thueringen (-15,2 percent). In Schleswig-Holstein the potato area increased by 7,3 percent. Lower Saxony, however, remains the most important federal state for potato cultivation. Here about 46 percent of the total German potato crop was harvested, 4,85 million tons (-7,6 percent compared to 2011). After Lower Saxony Bavaria with 1,81 million tons (-13,2 percent) and Northrhine-Westphalia with 1,23 million tons (-23,9 percent) followed at a distance.
