Thanksgiving demand was up this year for both cabbage and cooking greens. "We had a good Thanksgiving push and both cabbage and cooking greens moved very well which is traditional for the holiday. They are all staples for Thanksgiving dinner. This may be because there were fewer areas that were producing," says says Bill Nardelli Sr. of Nardelli Brothers, noting that the cooking greens include collards, kales and mustards tops. "We were fortunate here on the East Coast to have a good abundance of supply."

Right now the company is harvesting these items in three different regions: New Jersey, Georgia and also south Florida. While New Jersey is in full volume with these items, Georgia and Florida are just beginning production and they will increase in volume in the next few weeks.
Christmas pull coming up
Looking ahead, as is usual for the week after Thanksgiving, movement has slowed on items this week though it's expected to pick up again by the end of the week or early next week to get ready for the Christmas pull.

As for pricing? "I think cooking greens could be a bit higher than they were and cabbage is about where it was last year," says Nardelli Sr. "I think as long as there are no weather events, the pricing will stay relatively the same. We're very conscious of a concerned consumer right now who is very much prioritizing their purchases now."
