Philippines counts US$29.8 million in crop losses after Uwan

Super Typhoon Uwan has caused extensive agricultural losses in Nueva Vizcaya, with total damage estimated at P3.13 billion, according to the provincial government. Agriculture accounted for P2.01 billion (US$35.3 million) of the total, with 31,625 farmers and fisherfolk affected.

Damage reports show that high-value crops recorded the largest losses at P1.7 billion (US$29.8 million). Losses to farm equipment and other agricultural infrastructure were estimated at P36.37 million (US$640,000).

Nueva Vizcaya is a major production area for high-value fruit and vegetable crops and is known as the salad bowl of the Cagayan Valley, as well as the citrus and ginger capital of the Philippines.

Infrastructure damage was recorded at P1.11 billion (US$19.5 million). This includes losses to bridges, roads, flood-control systems, schools, government facilities, tourism areas, health centers, churches, and other provincial assets.

Gov. Jose Gambito has established "Task Force Uwan" to coordinate recovery and rebuilding operations.
