European apples are being introduced to Brazilian consumers through the "Have an Apple Day! Get to know high-quality apples from the EU" information and promotion program, co-financed by the European Union. The campaign aims to familiarise the Brazilian market with apples produced in Europe's cooler growing regions, where slower ripening affects firmness and flavour development.
Brazil produces about 1.1 million tons of apples annually, placing it among the largest producers in the Southern Hemisphere. Domestic production, however, does not meet year-round demand. CEPEA and other local industry sources report that Brazil imported more than 150,000 tons of apples in 2024, reflecting continued reliance on external suppliers.
European production totals approximately 11–12 million tons per year, with Poland, Italy, and France contributing around two-thirds of the volume. European orchards operate under regulated food-safety frameworks, with established traceability and environmental requirements across the supply chain.
The program outlines attributes commonly associated with EU-grown apples, including regulated production standards, traceability systems, sustainability requirements, and a broad varietal range.
Over the next three years, the initiative will run activities aimed at trade professionals and consumers. Planned components include media outreach, participation in Brazilian industry events, digital information content, B2B engagement with importers and distributors, and a study visit to Europe for selected partners to observe production systems.
