Just like in other hilly and mountainous areas in northern Italy, snow fell last weekend in Piedmont. "In our area in the province of Cuneo, we woke up on Saturday morning with a beautiful layer of snow, which reached over 20 cm in the valley. Our apple orchards were covered in snow," reports Alex Tallone, technician at OP Joinfruit.

The harvesting of the MC38 CrimsonSnow variety is not yet finished: "We are at 90%, so there are some plants still with the apples. The whitened scenery creates a fascinating image due to the contrast with the bright red fruit."

"But what happens now to the apples still on the trees? Absolutely nothing: we will wait a few days for the snow to melt, and then the farmers will finish harvesting." Given the time of year and the weather forecast, the nets had been closed to prevent any damage.

"It snowed throughout the province of Cuneo, but the municipalities of Busca, Dronero, Caraglio, and Cuneo were the ones that received the most snowfall. Consider that, by midday on Saturday 22 November, there were 70 to 100 cm of fresh snow in the neighbouring Maritime Alps."

Some pictures of the harvest in recent weeks
Regarding the 2025 harvest of the MC38 CrimsonSnow variety, Tallone comments that: "The yields have been very good, with production slightly higher than estimated. The quality of the product is excellent, as the environmental conditions in September and October were optimal, with a good temperature range between day and night, a factor that enhanced the colour and organoleptic characteristics of the fruit."
