The top fruit market is currently facing a difficult period. "Sales of Goudreinet, for example, are not moving at all at the moment. Hopefully, there will be a turnaround in the winter when the East returns, but right now it is a drama," says trade manager Arnold Wakker of trading platform Service2Fruit.
"With Jonagold, growers generally still have a product with a somewhat longer shelf life, but here too, hopes are mainly pinned on the East. Our Eastern neighbours are also not cooperating in Elstar sales this year, and we are seeing the same with Wellant and Goudreinet," continues the trade manager.

Conference price difference runs into the dimes
"In pears, the situation is much more positive, especially for Lukassen. We have seen more demand in recent days, and unsorted products are only available in limited quantities. With Conference pears, growers will need to rely a bit more on the trade to move their product properly. But the quality differences are significant. There are lots with 10-20% rotten or soft fruit, so the price gap between good and inferior batches will soon run into the double digits," Arnold adds.
Arnold joined the platform on 1 September. "That was not the easiest start, actually two months late," says the trade manager. "At the time, sales did not pick up during the first two months of the season simply because the trade was not looking for anything due to a shortage of bins and storage space, while growers had plenty of product to offer."
"Gradually, some trade in Conference and Lukassen has developed, but there is still no one looking for apples. All trading parties are clearing their own stocks first, and Elstar suppliers servicing supermarkets are also not yet looking for product. Hopefully, this will be a different story for Elstar after the New Year, and that we will be past the poorer Conference lots as well, so we can move forward with better pears."
