Ukrainian onion producers have reduced wholesale prices by around 15 per cent as medium and low-quality onions dominate market supply. Market analysts report that expanding volumes of substandard onions are continuing to pressure prices. According to growers, the share of off-spec vegetables in the 2025 harvest is at least double last year's level.
EastFruit analysts noted that "an increase in the supply of low-quality produce that does not command strong demand is causing a further decline in onion prices on the Ukrainian market. According to the farmers themselves, the share of off-spec vegetables in the total harvest for 2025 is at least twice last year's figures."
Current wholesale prices range from 4 to 9 UAH per kilogram, depending on quality and batch size, equal to approximately US$0.10 to US$0.23 per kilogram. This is about 15 per cent below last week's levels. The decline is linked to prolonged rains during harvest, which damaged the quality and left part of the crop unsuitable for long-term storage. Growers and traders are moving these onions quickly, adding pressure to the market.
High-quality onions are appearing less frequently, as growers are holding better-grade produce in storage in anticipation of higher prices later in the season.
The average price is now about 42 per cent lower than during the same period last year. Analysts indicate the market may continue to soften if domestic supply keeps rising. A gradual stabilisation is expected once higher-quality onions return to the market and the volume of off-spec produce decreases.
