National Fruit Show sees 90% rise in top fruit entries

The 92nd National Fruit Show took place on 5 November at the Kent Showground, attracting a broad mix of exhibitors, visitors, and growers. Organised by the Marden Fruit Show Society, the event continues to serve as one of the UK's main gatherings for the fruit industry.

Since moving to a one-day format, the show has seen rising exhibitor participation, with a mix of long-term supporters and new entrants. Ticket registrations increased by 33% compared to 2024, underscoring the event's role as a key meeting point for growers, suppliers, and other industry stakeholders.

The show remains known for hosting the UK's largest top-fruit competition. This year, entries in top-fruit classes increased by 90% compared with 2024 and by 15% over 2023. Nut entries reached their highest level since 2022, and interest in both the new Harlequin and returning Tastiest Apple classes was strong.

Show Manager Eileen Haffenden described this year's event as "a celebration of collaboration and commitment within the fruit sector," acknowledging the continued support of long-standing and new exhibitors.

Nigel Bardsley, Chair of the Marden Fruit Show Society, said the event's purpose remains to connect growers and suppliers and promote high standards in fruit production. "The National Fruit Show continues to play a vital role in bringing the industry together," he said. "We've seen a clear increase in visitor engagement this year, showing the value of creating a space where growers and suppliers can connect, share knowledge, and celebrate the quality of British fruit production."

The competition section drew attention for both participation and quality. Chair of Competitions Annette Bardsley noted that "the standard of fruit on display this year has been outstanding," while Jonathan Blackman, Chair of Judges, said simplified entry rules had encouraged more growers to participate.

The show was officially opened by Judith Batchelar OBE, who emphasised the importance of horticulture within the UK's food system and the opportunities for innovation. "Today we are here to celebrate great British growers and the contribution that you all make to the health of the nation," she said.

Ali Capper, executive chair of British Apples & Pears Limited, announced new financial products designed to support growers' investment in orchards, storage, and grading infrastructure, linked to long-term supply contracts.

Show President Catherine Paice said the event's one-day format has revitalised participation and engagement, adding that preparations for the 93rd edition are already underway.

Organisers expressed thanks to all participants, sponsors, and exhibitors for their continued involvement in supporting the event and the wider British fruit sector.
