"On October 1st, 2025, French production of table apples was estimated at 1.56 million tons, which is 4% less than in 2024, but 6% more than the five-year average for 2020-2024. In September, the start of the campaign was marked by a market that was less active than last year, and by lower prices," according to the Agreste economic outlook.
Estimated production for 2025 slightly lower than in 2024
On October 1st, French table apple production was forecast at 1.56 million tons for 2025, which is 4% less than in 2024. The situation varies depending on the region. In the PACA region, the current harvest confirms the downturn in production (due to poor flowering and the presence of aphids), with a drop of 8%. Sizes tend to be small to medium. In the Occitanie region, production is expected to be up by 4%, due to increased acreage in the Garonne valley and improved yields in Languedoc-Roussillon, despite heavy scab and aphid pressure. In Pays de la Loire, fruit sizes are smaller than expected due to the impact of the ash aphid, and despite a drop in acreage, production is expected to rise slightly. In Nouvelle Aquitaine, production is down by 15%, due to heatwave and pests, as well as a reduction in acreage in Aquitaine. In Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, production is down by 6%, penalized by scab, aphids, and early summer rainfall. And in Centre-Val de Loire, production is also down, this time by 6%, due to aphids and heatwaves.
Lower prices than last year at the start of the campaign
"In September 2025, table apple prices were down by 4% compared with September 2024, but 6% higher than the 2020-2024 average. The demand from distribution was weaker than last year, penalized by the abundant availability of summer fruit such as peaches and plums."
