Lower yield for Greek oranges, but also lower prices

The weather in Greece has resulted in a lower yield for oranges this season, says Marian Petalas, sales manager for Greek fresh produce exporter Petalas Fruits: "Compared to previous seasons, this year's orange production is significantly lower. The main reason for this has been the lack of rainfall, which led to smaller-sized fruit and reduced yields. Weather conditions have played a major role. Fortunately, based on current observations, we expect no major quality issues for oranges this season. However, mandarin production has been affected; flowering coincided with unfavorable weather, which has led to reduced yields. For oranges, we anticipate a stable season ahead."

Over the past few weeks, demand for Greek oranges has been increasing, Petalas explains. "Demand for oranges has remained steady, with buyers showing strong interest in consistent quality and competitive pricing. We have seen a gradual increase in inquiries over the past few weeks as markets are preparing for the main consumption period. Our key markets include the Balkans and broader Europe, with particular focus on Scandinavia, where we see strong opportunities for growth. We are also exploring the possibility of expanding into new European destinations, where demand for high-quality Greek citrus is increasing."

Despite lower production and steady demand, pricing has been lower this year, which Petalas states could lead to advantages for buyers: "With more than 60 years of experience in the fruit business, we provide our clients with a competitive advantage by combining good quality with competitive pricing. Long-standing partnerships, reliability, and attention to detail ensure our customers can sell with confidence in their markets. Prices are generally lower this season compared to previous years, which can create opportunities for buyers to strengthen their positions in their markets, while still receiving premium quality."

"We hope for a smooth and fruitful campaign, with stable weather conditions and strong demand supporting both growers and buyers. Our goal is to ensure that this season brings positive results and satisfaction to all partners involved," Petalas concludes.
