New Zealand's onion growers are now slicing into over $40 million worth of exports to Indonesia thanks to a bilateral trade deal signed by the Government.
Trade and Agriculture Minister, Todd McClay, announced last July that New Zealand-grown onions would soon be allowed back into Indonesia without fumigation, saving growers time and money.¹
In the 2023/24 season, the New Zealand onion industry exported $184.8 million worth of onions to 50+ countries. But exports to Indonesia took a big hit after stricter import requirements were introduced, decreasing by $32.8 million between 2022/23 and 2023/24.²
Thankfully, that situation is now resolved and shows the power that government intervention can have on New Zealand's horticulture industry.
