India's berry market is witnessing new consumption patterns, supported by a growing segment of consumers showing an openness for imported produce of diverse origins. From being a novelty to becoming a sought-after lifestyle staple, raspberries, blackberries, and blueberries are being increasingly spotted in supermarket chains, luxury hotels, and in homes of the health-conscious. "This shift emphasizes not just changing dietary choices but also the complex logistics and policy decisions that influence the availability of premium imported fruit," says Naufil Kalam, Director of Operations at fresh produce importer CR Fruits International.

"Peruvian blueberries lead with favorable trade agreements that lower duties. Their sweet-tart flavor and price point of USD 3 to 3.5 per 125g punnet align with Indian tastes and purchase propensity. Currently, Peruvian blueberry prices match local ones," Kalam mentions as he points to CR Fruits' Dreamberry brand partnering with Peruvian growers to deliver quality fruit to urban health-conscious shoppers.
However, Dutch berry imports present some unique constraints: "With Dutch berries, the most critical aspects are dealing with high air freight and maintaining impeccable quality across the cold chain. Even minor deviations in temperature, handling, or timing can compromise the fruit's integrity and shelf life," Kalam explains. "Dutch berries fall under the ultra-premium category, with high-net-worth individuals and luxury-focused institutions showing interest and intent for access. Despite the import challenges, we source two to three pallets every week to meet high-end demand," he adds.

CR Fruits ensures berry quality with team members overseeing packing stations at origin and staying abreast with strict post-harvest protocols. "Our on-ground presence enables us to make real-time decisions towards maintaining freshness and brand consistency," Kalam shares while explaining that prices have remained stable compared to past seasons.
Year-round demand continues to grow as berries find a spot in smoothies, desserts, and gourmet dishes, especially in metro cities. "Consumers seek health and versatility in berries, and our marketing campaigns with chefs and influencers promote innovative uses, embedding berries into India's evolving food culture," Kalam says.

CR Fruits expects steady Dutch blackberry, raspberry, and strawberry shipments, alongside 4–5 weekly Peruvian blueberry pallets under their Dreamberry brand. "Additional berry volumes from Portugal, Spain, and Italy will diversify supply, though high European summer temperatures raise concerns about potential quality impacts. We are also targeting domestic production under Dreamberry within the next five years, envisioning year-round multi-berry access," Kalam concludes.
