Florida allocates $139M to boost citrus recovery

The state of Florida's citrus sector is set for changes with the signing of SB 2500, the General Appropriations Act. Governor Ron DeSantis has allocated $139,673,565 to facilitate developments within this agricultural sector.

Matt Joyner, executive vice president and CEO of Florida Citrus Mutual, highlighted the importance of this funding. He noted, "Research is more critical for the industry than ever before." The allocation aims to advance citrus research, conduct field trials for treatments, and assist in planting disease-tolerant varieties.

Budget breakdowns include $104.5 million directed towards the CRAFT Foundation and CRDF initiatives. In addition, $10 million is earmarked for upgrading packing equipment, and another $10 million will bolster marketing efforts. These funds also extend to enhancing citrus health responses, expanding nurseries, augmenting inspection support, and developing new varieties. Such initiatives are designed to expedite the industry's recovery trajectory.
