Armenia imposes import quotas on Iranian agricultural products

Armenia has introduced import quotas on selected Iranian agricultural goods, following the implementation of the full-scale free trade agreement between the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU) and Iran, effective May 15.

While the agreement reduces or eliminates tariffs on many goods, it allows member states to set quotas to protect their domestic markets. Under the new Armenian regulation, annual quotas include:

  • Potatoes: 53 tonnes
  • Tomatoes: 364 tonnes
  • Cabbage: 388 tonnes
  • Cucumbers: 1,791 tonnes
  • Tomato paste: 365 tonnes

Imports exceeding these quotas will be subject to standard EAEU tariffs (e.g., €10–15 per tonne for tomatoes, depending on the season).

Iran's agricultural exports are highly competitive due to low production costs, favorable climate, affordable labor, and cheap energy, particularly in food processing. This price advantage has prompted EAEU members to implement protective measures to support local producers.
