EU Potato Market Report 2nd July:

Warm weather slows sales as growers clear old stocks

Market challenges remain persistent in the sector. Consumption has been stifled by recent warm weather conditions. The broader rollout of the school lunch initiative may also have suppressed sales over the past six months.

On a positive note, demand from the food service sector is expected to improve as schools break for the summer this week. So far, demand for early varieties has been positive, and Queens continue to enter the market as they reach maturity.

Severe heat across European countries has further suppressed consumption and sales. While there are few signs of recovery for the old crop trade, growers have made relatively good progress in emptying their stores. However, some growers still have stocks to place, adding pressure on buyers to ensure product movement.
