Bogura potato exports double to 36,000 tons

Between February and June, the northern district of Bogura, Bangladesh, has observed a rise in potato exports, with a reported shipment volume of 36,009 tons. This figure more than doubles the 16,000 tons exported during the same period last year. The increased volume has been valued at approximately $6.15 million.

Primary exports originated from Shibganj Upazila, with Kahaloo and Sherpur also contributing. These exports have reached over 30 international markets, including Malaysia, Indonesia, Saudi Arabia, Singapore, Thailand, Japan, the UAE, and Nepal.

Among the exported varieties, 'Lal Pakri' and 'Diamond' are notable for their quality and long shelf life, which are essential for export logistics. "This year export marks a significant improvement in volume, thanks to quality production and strong demand from international markets," commented Momota Haque, from the Department of Marketing in Bogura.

Local exporters, however, report trade disruptions with India, impacting shipments to Nepal and Bhutan due to logistical challenges in Siliguri. An anonymous exporter from Bogura noted, "We could have exported even more if we weren't facing obstacles in sending potatoes to Nepal and Bhutan."

In the local arena, Mukul Hossain of Agrotech BD Company claimed the export of 3,375 tons this season, achieving sales in Malaysia at Tk520 per maund. Ms. Sagar Traders, led by Md. Sujan Islam stands as the largest regional exporter, dispatching 12,300 tons of potatoes in the previous year.

The region's potato export was initiated in 1998, with initial shipments of 126 tons to Singapore, Malaysia, Sri Lanka, and Middle Eastern countries. Currently, Malaysia alone accounts for nearly 80% of Bogura's export volume.

Experts believe policy reform and structural support could further facilitate export activities. Faridur Rahman Farid suggests that export zones be established along with contract growers to ensure quality and supply consistency. He proposes increasing the export incentive rate on raw potatoes to 30%.

The export growth is aligned with a record harvest in Bogura. Reports from the Department of Agricultural Extension indicate that the district cultivated potatoes over 60,435 hectares, surpassing the target of 55,060 hectares, with yields reaching around 1.45 million tons.

Badiuzzaman, a local potato trader, notes that Bogura is gaining global recognition as an export hub.
