The "Golden Channel" is reshaping China's tropical fruit trade, reports People's Daily Online, and is stated by News Iqilu as durian prices drop and quality rises. Thanks to the China-Laos Railway and smart cold chain logistics, durians now reach Chengdu in just 72 hours, half the time of road transport, with nearly zero spoilage and 50% lower freight costs.
On June 12, a "Lancang-Mekong-Chengdu" train delivered 330 tons of Thai durians and coconuts. Inside refrigerated containers kept at 13°C, the fruit arrives firm, sweet, and ready to hit shelves within hours.
Rail beats sea freight, as retailers now replenish stock in 6 days instead of 15. Chengdu-based importer Sichuan Langhao expects a 20% surge in durian trade this year, targeting over $27 million in imports.
Upgraded customs processes also shave 1-2 days off clearance, while plans are underway to certify Chengdu as a national cold chain hub.
This shift in logistics and infrastructure marks a significant step forward for China's imported fruit supply chain. By cutting transportation times and losses while maintaining quality, the China-Laos Railway and improved cold chain systems are helping to stabilise prices and meet growing consumer demand. As efficiency and coordination across ports and customs continue to improve, both traders and consumers stand to benefit from fresher, more affordable produce.
