Mangosteen from Betong Mist registered as GI product in Yala Province

The Thai Ministry of Commerce has officially registered "Mangosteen in the Betong Mist" as a Geographical Indication (GI) product of Yala Province, marking a strategic move to strengthen the agricultural sector and enhance local branding, as reported by Bangkokbiznews.

This registration, the fourth GI product for Yala, aims to raise the competitiveness of local produce by protecting its origin, controlling quality, and boosting market value. Other GI products from the region include Ban Nang Sata bananas, Yala Sadet Nam durians, and Betong Shogun oranges.

Grown in the misty highlands of Betong and Than To districts, these mangosteens are known for their distinctive round shape, thick purple-red skin, and white cottony flesh with a sweet-sour flavour.

By leveraging the region's climate and soil conditions, producers have cultivated a variety that stands out in quality and consumer appeal. The GI status not only helps maintain these standards but also adds marketing power for local growers targeting both domestic and international buyers.

This initiative aligns with Thailand's broader push to fortify grassroots economies by securing intellectual property rights for unique agricultural products. The recognition is expected to open new market opportunities and improve income distribution in local farming communities.
