New trading hubs reduce mango arrivals at Chelgal market

The Chelgal mango market in India near Jagtial, Telangana, is experiencing reduced mango arrivals, with only 1,200,000 kg received over the past 20 days. This decline is attributed to the emergence of new markets in the district and nearby areas. Established in 2005, the Chelgal market was developed for local mango growers. The Telangana government later enhanced the market by acquiring 4.05 hectares and constructing sheds at a cost of approximately $600,000.

Jagtial mangoes are known for their quality, leading to demand from North India and the Middle East. Despite this, the market is facing challenges due to new trading hubs in Metpalli, Korutla, Raikal, and Dharmaram. Traders from regions like Nagpur and Delhi now prefer these new locations, impacting Jagtial's market activity. Of 86 licensed traders, only 18 remain active.

Farmers express concerns over low prices, receiving $0.42 to $0.48 per kg instead of the expected $0.54 to $0.60. This pricing issue, combined with earlier losses from inadequate flowering and pests, discourages farmers from participating in the market. Jagtial agriculture market committee secretary T Rajashekhar stated that local prices align with those in Nagpur, Batasingaram, Warangal, and Karimnagar. He reported that Banganapalli mangoes fetch $0.48 to $0.54 per kg, while the Himayat variety commands $0.72 to $0.78.
