Goa mango season delayed; Alphonso prices reach $6

Mango season has commenced, with prices elevated compared to previous years. Varieties like Alphonso, Manchurad, and Hilario from Goa are anticipated to enter the market by late March, but full availability might extend to late April or early May due to weather delays. Peak availability for these varieties is projected for April and May.

In the interim, mangoes from Hyderabad and Karnataka are filling the supply gap. Varieties such as Sindura from Hyderabad and Lalbagh from Telangana are currently available, priced at approximately $3 per kilogram. This season, mangoes are being sold by weight rather than by the dozen, with prices differing by variety.

Alphonso mangoes are retailing at $6 per piece, while Manchurad mangoes are priced at $5.40 each. Totapuri mangoes offer a more economical option, with two pieces available for approximately $1.20.

A limited quantity of Goan mangoes has started to appear in markets, but the majority of the current stock originates from Karnataka and Telangana. Usha Naik, a fruit seller in Panaji, stated, "Goan mangoes will be more widely available in the coming weeks." Vendor Tulsidas at the Panaji market noted that mango prices are expected to fluctuate as the season advances.

As the season progresses and more mangoes become available, prices may adjust based on supply and availability dynamics. While the full spectrum of Goan mangoes requires a wait, the season's onset suggests that more varieties will soon be accessible.
