In the Munshiganj district, potato cultivation has surpassed its target, reaching 34,758 hectares, an increase from last year's 34,355 hectares. This expansion is anticipated to lead to a record yield for this staple crop. Deputy Director of the Department of Agricultural Extension (DAE), Munshiganj, Biplob Kumar Mohanto, stated, "The potato growers have made a record potato cultivation in the district as 34,758 hectares of land have been brought under potato farming."
Potato farming has been distributed across various regions: 9,610 hectares in Munshiganj Sadar, 9,094 hectares in Tongibari, 1,950 hectares in Srinagar, 8,985 hectares in Sirajdikhan, 3,115 hectares in Louhajong, and 2,004 hectares in Gazaria.
The production target set at over 1,045,000 tons is anticipated to be exceeded this season. Last year, the cultivation spanned 34,355 hectares, yielding approximately 1,200,000 tons. Current weather conditions are favorable for potato cultivation, which might result in a surplus if conditions remain stable, according to a DAE official. Potato ranks as a primary food crop in Bangladesh, following rice and wheat. The nation has consistently produced an average of 10 million metric tons of potatoes over recent years.
