Japan has recently begun importing Hass avocados from the Philippines, a move facilitated by the efforts of the Philippine government. The avocados, originating from Mindanao, are favored in Japan for their unique size and color characteristics. Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. highlighted this development as evidence of the Philippines' commitment to enhancing its agricultural export portfolio and the superior quality of its produce.
This marks the Philippines as the first Asian nation to export Hass avocados to Japan, joining other major suppliers such as Mexico, Peru, and the United States. The year 2023 saw the Philippines achieve a trade surplus of $990 million, bolstered by agricultural exports to Japan valued at $1.1 billion.
