Unions announce indefinite strike starting from 28 August

Dockworker strike threatens Indian cargo flows

Major ports in India are preparing for potential operational disruptions as dockworker unions have announced an indefinite strike starting from 28 August. The action comes after the Indian Ports Association and the shipping ministry have not reached a settlement on the demands made by the unions since 5 September 2021.

Despite several bipartite wage negotiation committee meetings, no progress has been made, leading to frustrations among the dockworkers. The unions have criticized the ministry's approach to the negotiations, describing it as unfair and without justification. The primary issues at stake include wage increases and the distribution of productivity-linked rewards, which have been pending resolution. India's major ports, including Nhava Sheva and Chennai Port, play a crucial role in the country's trade, handling a significant portion of ocean trade. Recent data shows a growth in cargo volumes and containerized trade through these ports, highlighting their importance in India's economy. However, the impending strike poses a risk to the continuity of this growth trajectory.
