In Nepal, an agricultural initiative aimed at bolstering cash crops and fruit production through advanced technology has been introduced in Sankhuwasabha and Bhojpur districts. These areas have been designated as super zones for cardamom and orange cultivation, respectively, across 10 local levels in Sankhuwasabha and six in Bhojpur for a duration of six years. Navraj Gurung, the head of the Prime Minister's Agriculture Modernization Project Implementation Unit, detailed that the project spans 2,313 hectares for cardamom and 687 hectares for oranges.
Key focuses for the current year include enhancing irrigation systems and constructing modern cardamom furnaces to elevate production within these super zones. Financially, the project has earmarked Rs. 2 million for capital expenses and Rs 40 million for operational costs. Specifically, Sankhuwasabha's allocation includes Rs 7 million for irrigation, Rs 4.6 million for furnace construction and installation, and additional funds for the establishment of a cardamom processing industry, mini moisture storage for oranges, and the expansion of the orange cultivation area. Alongside these, 24 other initiatives have been sanctioned to support a variety of agricultural sectors including cardamom, orange, rice, corn, wheat, potato, vegetable cultivation, and fisheries.
