Saudi Arabia's markets are now filled with 11 types of locally grown fruits, as part of the government's initiative to achieve food self-sufficiency. The Ministry of Environment, Water, and Agriculture (MEWA) reported the availability of figs, dates, grapes, pomegranates, bananas, cantaloupes, watermelons, papayas, guavas, citrus fruits, and apples. This development aligns with the Saudi Vision 2030 objectives, aiming to enhance food security and supply the population with fresh produce.
MEWA has been actively working on strategic plans to boost local fruit and vegetable production, aiming for higher self-sufficiency levels and a sustainable agricultural sector. The ministry supports farmers and encourages the adoption of advanced agricultural technologies to ensure the availability of quality fruits, thereby promoting healthier lifestyles among citizens and residents.
The "Harvest Season" campaign by MEWA, which featured local produce in Riyadh's public benefit markets, aimed to raise awareness of the health advantages of consuming organic and seasonal local fruits, enhancing their marketability.
