Sarawak gold pineapple farm opens in Malaysia

The TG Agro Fruit pineapple farm in Sungai Tukau is leading in the cultivation of the Sarawak Gold (SG1) pineapple variety, aiming to enhance pineapple cultivation in Sarawak and Malaysia. Minister of Agriculture and Food Security, Datuk Seri Mohamad Sabu, highlighted Malaysia's position to boost its pineapple exports globally in the coming years. He noted the current global demand for Malaysian pineapples at 4,000 containers against a supply of 800 containers.

The establishment of this farm allows for the distribution of SG1 variety seeds throughout Sarawak and Malaysia. Sheikh Umar Bagharib Ali, chairman of the Malaysian Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM), mentioned Sarawak's goal to increase its pineapple cultivation area to 20,000 hectares by 2030 to support national industry growth and strengthen global market presence while satisfying local demand.

Malaysia primarily exports pineapples to Singapore, China, Europe, and Japan, mainly as juice. LPNM's statement pointed out Sarawak's potential to become the leading pineapple-producing region in Malaysia, leveraging its 59,000 hectares of idle land for cultivation. Currently, Sarawak hosts approximately 700 pineapple farmers, with SG1 cultivation spanning 52.5 hectares and an anticipated seed output of 11.9 million by 2026. LPNM is committed to assisting in the expansion of SG1 cultivation nationwide.
