Vietnam reported earnings exceeding 1.3 billion USD from durian exports in the initial six months of 2024, marking a 40% increase compared to the previous year. The country has successfully secured over 700 growing area codes and nearly 200 packaging codes from China, enabling Vietnamese enterprises to export durians to this significant market. According to Vinafruit, efforts are underway to finalize a protocol for the official export of frozen durian to China, with an announcement expected shortly.
Considering China's annual expenditure of approximately 1 billion USD on frozen durian imports, Vietnam aims to capture a 30% market share. This could potentially generate an additional revenue of 300–500 million USD, contributing to about 10% of the estimated durian export turnover for the year. The ability to harvest durian throughout the year provides Vietnamese exporters with a competitive advantage. Furthermore, durian prices are anticipated to experience a substantial increase, potentially doubling or tripling, as demand for export surges.
