Protocol signed to facilitate export of fresh Malaysian durians to China

During a landmark visit by Premier Li Qiang to Malaysia, the two nations have forged a series of trade and economic agreements, marking a significant milestone in their 50-year diplomatic journey. Among the agreements, a notable protocol was signed to facilitate the export of fresh Malaysian durians to China, expanding the durian trade beyond the existing market for durian pulp, paste, and frozen whole fruits. This development comes as Malaysia looks to diversify its durian exports, which have seen a substantial increase in value to China over recent years.

The visit also saw the signing of a new five-year plan aimed at enhancing economic and trade cooperation, with a focus on high-level manufacturing and the digital economy. These pacts are expected to strengthen industry links in these priority sectors. Additionally, the two countries agreed on initiatives to promote investment in the digital and green economies, address transnational crime, and foster collaboration in various fields including housing, urban development, higher education, and cultural exchange.

Trade relations between China and Malaysia have been robust, with China being Malaysia's top trading partner. The recent agreements are anticipated to further consolidate these economic ties, despite underlying tensions over territorial claims in the South China Sea. Both nations have expressed a commitment to resolving such issues amicably, emphasizing the importance of their longstanding partnership.
