The cherry campaign at Coniglio di Adelfia in the Bari province started two weeks early, just like in other areas in Italy. "However, this has not let to satisfactory results as the market was not ready to welcome the produce. Quantities were good this year and the campaign will end this week in Italy, so there are only a few days to go. Yields are 30% lower for the majority of the varieties, but especially for Ferrovia," reports the owner Nicola Coniglio.
Coniglio stresses that commercialization is better now that prices are normal. The only negative note is that volumes are about to end. "When the produce lacks, quotations skyrocket and sales slow down. Foreign cherries are always available at prices that are often cheaper."
Talking about the destination markets, Coniglio says that Switzerland has been monopolized by Spain, whose campaign started early at competing prices. "In addition to Italy, where feedback has been great for both large (wholesale) and medium (retail chain) prices, we work a lot with Germany, where there is a lot of produce from Greece and Turkey, through with a lower quality."
Fig campaign
The season has already started. "The campaign of Petrelli green fiorone figs was practically non-existent. Last week's temperatures that almost reached 35°C scalded the produce, so we started processing black streaked fiorone figs of the Domenico Tauro variety. We are hoping that the excessive heat will not concentrate the harvesting period, otherwise it will be difficult to commercialize the produce."
