Brazilian pecans gain access to the Chinese market

The Brazilian Ministry of Agriculture and the General Administration of Customs of China have formalized an agreement concerning the sanitary and phytosanitary prerequisites for the exportation of Brazilian pecans to China. This development marks the official entry of Brazilian pecans into the Chinese marketplace.

This accord was ratified at the Cosban plenary session in Beijing, with Carlos Fávaro, the Brazilian Agriculture Minister, signing on behalf of Brazil. Presently, Brazil ranks as the fourth-largest pecan producer worldwide, boasting an orchard area of approximately 11,000 hectares, out of which 7,500 hectares are under production, yielding an annual production of around 6,000 tons.

This positions Brazil behind the United States, Mexico, and South Africa in terms of production volumes. Projections from the Brazilian Pecan Farming Institute indicate a potential increase in Brazilian pecan production of up to 70% by the year 2030.
