In Kerala, a significant increase in vegetable prices is impacting residents. The escalation in costs affects various vegetables, including green chillies, tomatoes, snake gourd, beans, broad beans, and cauliflower, with prices rising by Rs 10-50 over a week. Specifically, green chillies and tomatoes, essential for numerous recipes, have seen the most substantial hikes.
In Ernakulam, the price of long green chillies ranges from Rs 140-150 per kg, while round chillies are between Rs 145-155. Tomatoes are currently priced at Rs 80-100 per kg, reflecting a Rs 40 increase within a week. Additionally, ginger and beans are notably expensive, priced at Rs 200 and Rs 180 per kg, respectively. Minor price increments are also observed in potatoes, onions, and brinjal.
The primary factors contributing to the price surge include low vegetable availability and reduced production in neighboring states such as Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh, which are key suppliers to Kerala. Adverse weather conditions, including harsh summer and early rains, have damaged crops and hindered production. Traders indicate that if these market conditions continue, vegetable prices are expected to rise further. Conversely, the prices of carrots, beetroot, and plantains have recently decreased slightly.
