Mango production trends in Bangladesh

In Bangladesh, mango production has shown an upward trend, with exports also experiencing growth compared to the previous year. This development is attributed to government initiatives, policy support, and the widespread adoption of agricultural technologies. Despite concerns over potential yield reductions due to excessive heat, mango growers are making concerted efforts to enhance production. A variety of mangoes, including BARI Aam-3 (Amrapali), Khirshapati, and Fazli, among others, are being exported to meet both domestic and international demands.

Export destinations include countries in Europe, the Middle East, and others, with adherence to good agricultural practices (GAP) and Geographical Indication (GI) recognition playing crucial roles in facilitating mango exports. Bangladesh is ranked seventh globally in mango production. A review over the last seven years reveals fluctuating production and export volumes, with the 2022-23 season marking a significant increase in both metrics. Concerns exist for the 2023-24 season, with projections indicating a potential decrease in production by 10% to 15%.

Efforts are underway to develop new mango varieties, with BARI Aam-3 and BARI Aam-4 gaining international attention. The importance of presenting mangoes attractively and ensuring sterility for export purposes has been emphasized, alongside the significant export opportunity presented by the Bangladeshi diaspora. The adoption of GAP is seen as essential for leveraging the global appeal of Bangladeshi mangoes, known for their unique color and taste. The government's measures to boost mango exports are highlighted as pivotal for realizing the sector's full potential.
